PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

February 24, 2024 marked the largest organized meeting of Connecticut pathologists in over a decade.   We are a small state with only 300 CAP-affiliated pathologists.   In the span of four months, 142 pathologists enrolled as CSP members and over 75 attended our Saturday meeting.  A remarkable feat during a time that many state societies are struggling with engagement.

The journey began in April 2022, when Dr. Jain reached out to various people to restart CSP.   Committees were formed and individuals from different institutions stepped up to take various responsibilities in rebuilding the society.  My initial focus as president was to create the infrastructure for the Society and its committees to function.  We had little funding and a small group of volunteers led by Dr. Jain to donate their time to an uncertain venture.  In just under 2 years, CSP has achieved state-wide engagement that far exceeded initial expectations and hopes.

The Education Committee led by Dr. Mandavilli arranged an outstanding full-day agenda.  The meeting highlights include keynote speaker David Klimstra, MD, on digital pathology and artificial intelligence, panel based discussions on current leadership challenges, and a resident scholars session.   An addition resident-focused panel included pathologists from across our CT practices, which fostered the insightful sharing of perspectives from the academic and private/community sectors.  Our post-meeting surveys were overwhelmingly positive, with great enthusiasm for the future.

The Advocacy Committee led by Dr. Earle has sky-rocketed to coordinated attendance at CAP HOD meetings and Hill Day, established connections with neighboring state pathology societies and our local CT State Medical Society, as well as establishing a forum for active discussion of current legislative topics pertinent to protecting our profession.

It is an incredible honor and privilege to serve CSP as president at this time.  I am deeply grateful to our Board, Officers, Committee Members and the Society Members who have made CSP an early success.   I hope this is only the beginning of a robust society for years to come.
